I would love to report that I finished on the podium at the Waco Race. I did not. This was not really my plan. When you start doing this stuff in your 30's & 40's, the odds of being competitive are not that strong. My goal was to finish and finish I did.
The swim was pretty uneventful except that I had to grab a kayak about 250 yards into it. I have heard this is common for first timers. It is hard to get in a rhythm with all the excitement, people and getting grabbed on your face, neck, arms, legs and privates. Not sure if a triathlete has ever been brought up on statutory molestation charges, but it happens in every race I assure you.
Once I caught my breath everything went fine except for the fact that I do not swim that fast. Once on the bike, things were going great. I was passing people and gaining some ground. About thirty minutes into it, I was moving along at a good pace when all of a sudden I hear a pop, look down, and I had a flat tire. This by itself is not so bad except that I hit the brakes, stopped pretty suddenly, and forgot about the fact that I had just started using bike shoes with clips. This caused me to smack the pavement because my feet were locked in the pedals. This is a novice mistake, so I am a novice. I wish I had a recorder with me to recall the four letter words that are still part of my "panic vocabulary". I can recall a few. Email me if you are interested.
Took almost 30 minutes for me to get moving again. I had no equipment to change it, and had to wait on AAA roadside assistance (actually the race officials radio the mobile bike assistance car, and they are fast once they arrive. The course is 26 miles, so it took a few minutes for me to get moving again, 27 to be exact. This put me in almost last place, except for one person, according to the bike doctors. By the end of the bike ride, I managed to catch up to a few stragglers, but for the most part I was way behind.
By the time the run started it was pretty hot and I had about an hour left to go. Keep in mind most people are done or near finishing by this time. It is quite demoralizing, but like I said, I was only there to finish. The run started nice, but the middle part was in some hills that were a beating. I was not prepared for this, but got through it.
So I did finish, I did hit my target weigh in of 188 (BTW, I still have a long way to go here, more on this later), I did NOT finish last, I got a cool scrape on my knee, and got to eat a free slice of crappy pizza at the end!

Bring back the 80's
Just a matter of time before my scale will no longer be reading in the 190's. See ya fat-a$$! 190's may be a desirable price range for a home, but not where you want your scale to appraise when you are standing on it.
All that to say, my morning weigh in was at 190. This has not been the case since the last time I caught the flu and puked for 3 days straight. So I am bringing back the 80's (well, 180's). My desire for race number 2 (this Sunday, July 24th) was a 188 weigh in. This may be possible as I have 3 days to make it happen. I am sure I will hit this target in the next week or two regardless, and blow past it!

I also want to remind you that you wasted a lot of money on records, tapes and cd's of these idiots who blew it all on hotels and heroin. Well, you now have a chance to redeem yourself and direct some of your money to a better cause.
And the good thing is that you don't have to admit that you owned all of Poison's albums. Geez, look how bad they look!
Looks like a drag version of Hillary Clinton with some sorta Keith Richards/Steven Tyler bleach-blonde grandma. These dudes should not be posing in the same picture. You do have to hand it to them, though, even with their drug induced crows feet farms, they can still pull off a Blue Steel that would Ben Stiller jealous. Wait, is that Neil Diamond? I could hardly see him due to his camo scarf.

Race this Sunday
Traveling to Waco this Sunday for my very first Olympic distance Triathlon event. I am excited and a little apprehensive. Last Saturday was the very first time I swam in open water. It is quite different than swimming in a pool (I got bit by a fish), and I do not sight very well. No problem, because the strategy they teach is to follow someone else. There are (at least) two benefits of this:
1. You use 30-35% less energy drafting off of another swimmer
2. You save a lot of hamstring use by not having to look up and ahead.
So, the trick this Sunday will be if I can stay disciplined enough to swim in someone else's armpit and not continuously look up. I was really amazed at how well the drafting works. I am going to implement this strategy in traffic and see if I can save on some gas.
I do not have a still photo to post that is recent, but I did appear in a youtube video of my brothers making over the weekend. It is really cool because it involves our kids and their cousins doing some pool/camera tricks. Worth the watch! I appear shirtless at about the 2:30 mark for a few frames. Not yet the buffleupagus (Big Bird's Friend) I will be by October, but better than my original photo that got this train moving.
At least now I can look in the mirror and say "Hey dude, your not that Fat!"
BTW, the guitar solo with the brush on the butt is our oldest son Hays.

New Bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some awesome news. I have a new bike. I got an email this week from a triathlon coach to come get fitted for a bike that someone gave to me. What a plus. My old bike was borrowed and not the greatest. The new one is pretty bad ass! Th best news is that it was free. It rides much faster than the other one.
I also got to meet some of the kids that are part of the Belize orphanage last weekend in St. Louis. It was amazing to hear their stories. The lady that runs it has taken in over 600 children who are unwanted, abused and worse. The work that she is doing is awesome. Some of the kids are now attending the University there. This gives them a HUGE advantage as few people get to do this, especially those from difficult circumstances.
The TriWaco event is a week from Sunday. I will post results and a pic after the event.

Dallas is Hot!
Next race is in 4 weeks from this Sunday. 1,500 Swim, 40K bike and 10K run. Should be a 3 1/2-4 hour fun fest!

First Event Completed!
On Sunday June 19th, I completed the first event in the Morphin 4 Orphans challenge. It was quite a telling event. I was 14th out of 22 in my age group. My swim time was 7:06, bike was 49:00 and run was 30:36.
Nothing outstading about these results, but I did complete the race. I did notice that it is much more difficult to move your body around in water, on a bike, and especially on foot when you weigh more than you should. It really hits you on the run which is the last event. Good news is I was down 8 lbs off my high of 206 for the race, 198 for those bad at math. Although this helped, there is still more ground to cover.
The picture is me right before crossing the finish line. I have to say, I was feeling pretty good until I saw it. Being out there competing with everyone made me kind of feel like I look like they do. When you see a picture of yourself, you have to come back to the reality of "Hey, you are still fat dude!"
My next goal is to run the July 24th TriWaco race. This will be roughly double the distance what the last race was except for the swim which is 5 times as long. My goal on this one is to be down to 185 lbs by the day of the race. This should make it easier to lug my stuff around and be more competitive.

RESULTS Baby!!!
SO i just set up the blog. Hope you enjoy. Will keep all of (3 so far, many thanks) my supporters posted!
Ok so if you are like me, you could care less about all the intent and commitments and promises. YOU WANT RESULTS. When I started this embarrassing transformation, I was a robust 206 lbs which is only 32 ounces off of my lifetime achievement award of fatness (208 for those of you bad at math-this likely happened one winter around Christmas when everyone is passing the desserts around like weed at a Van Halen concert).
So, those who are interested will be happy to know that I am down to 198 as of this morning 6-15-2011. Just fyi, I take my official weight every monrning after I wake up and pee.
As for training, I did sleep in this morning. Rough night with our little one AND our house alarm went off in the middle of the night. One of the kids dropped a hardback book off their bunkbed and it hit the wood floor. This set off a glass break detector and me running around the house looking for an ass to kick. Didn't find one.
So training to date is as follows:
I am swimming about 1 mile in a pool generally.
I am biking 12-15 miles at a time sometimes followed by a quick run (1-2 miles).
I am running about 5 miles per workout now, which started off as about 2 miles per workout.
I do all of the above workouts 2x per week.
First race is this Sunday. It is a pretty short distance overall. Swim 300 Meters, Bike 13 miles and run 3.1 miles. I can do all of these seperately but have not put them all together recently. My goal is to finish without barfing up breakfast. If I fail to achieve this I will get a picture!
I will post a race picture after the event!

So last week we went to the Hawaiian Falls Water Park for the kids end of the year celebration. It was a fun filled day with the family, until I got home an uploaded the pictures from Jolie’s camera. I was not impressed with what I saw. I had to come to grips with the fact that I have turned into a pale, soft, squishy marhsmellow bag! The funny thing is the image of me getting off the water slide somehow got set up as the wallpaper on my computer. Seeing this, while I was frantically trying to change it during a power point presentation in front of a dozen people, made me realize it is time for a big change (ok so that part is a stretch, I was just trying to change before Jolie came in).
So I have decided to run the following races and chart my progress.
Mansfield Sprint Triathlon – Mansfield, Texas June 19, 2011 (300m swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run)
TriWaco Triathlon – Waco, Texas July 24, 2011 (1500m swim, 25 mile bike, 6.2 mile run)
Ironman 70.3 Austin – Austin, Texas October 23, 2011 (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run)
During that same timeframe, I will also be upgrading all of my current equipment (at my own expense). The stuff I use now is really pathetic!
In order to up the ante and make sure I stick to the program, I have decided to raise $10,000 in the process for King’s Children Home in Belize. This will be done through King’s Ransom Foundation. If you are looking at the goal and criticizing the progress and thinking "Man, he's got a long way to go!" then get out your card and donate NOW! The rest of you can read on.
King's Ransom Foundation is an organization where 100% of the proceeds actually go out in the form of benefits. The founders are volunteers and the only staff person is sponsored by an outside business. This is a great way to run a charity. The King’s Children Home (KCH) is a private, non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping and providing residential care for children in difficult circumstances regardless of their social status, culture, race or religious belief.
Please consider being a part of my team. My motto is Eat Less, Feed More. By the look of my picture you know I can afford to do this, and if you are like most Americans, you can too. I am asking anyone and everyone to consider forgoing a meal once a week or once a month and donate what you would spend on it to my cause. 100% of the proceeds that go to King’s Ransom Foundation will go to feeding orphans and teaching them success principles so they do not become lifelong dependents on handouts.
In exchange for your support, I will keep you up to date on my training progress, race performance, equipment upgrades and most of all post humiliating pictures of myself as I go Morphin’ for Orphans. If you do not know what morphing is, look up on Wikipedia and enjoy the pics of George W. Schwarzeneggerr! Of course the goal is that after about 6-8 weeks the pictures are no longer embarrassing and my soft body becomes more of a hard body and many of you will be jumping on board!
So to calculate, figure what you spend on eating out a meal (call this number x). Decide to brown bag instead or forego altogether. Determine if you want to skip one meal per month, 2times per month or once a week. Multiply x times frequency (monthly = 5, bi-monthly=10 & weekly = 20) and donate it to my Eat Less, Feed More campaign! For example, if you spend 10 bucks on a meal and decide to forego monthly, then $10/meal times 5 months =$50. Get your credit card out now, hit the donate button and go.
I will be investing about $3,500 in equipment and donating to this cause during this timeframe as well. So please jump on board and forward this to others you know. I will make it worth your time and their time in entertainment simply by posting revealing photos of myself that will definitely make it an investment in hysterility. Thanks and pass it on!
